Baby Pillows: The Ideal Add on For Your Kid

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

One hears of numerous expert opinions on why babies do not require pillows and how dangerous pillows can be for the health of your baby. Well, most of these judgments overstate the dangers and do not correctly portray the need for baby pillows. It is a fact that children less than one year of age do not usually need pillows and in some cases, the pillows may not be safe for his/her health. However, past that age, using a baby pillow is no more harmful and can actually aid your baby in sleeping better.

During the early years, the skull bones are very soft and keeping the head in one position may result in the skull developing a lopsided appearance. Sleeping on the back can lead to formation of a depression on the back of the head. Using a baby pillow can help prevent this and provides the requisite support to the head of your baby. Choosing the right kind of pillow is vital. A feather pillow can cause allergies and a soft pillow may result in suffocation; both are therefore best avoided. A pillow such as the latest memory foam baby pillows are good products which provide the requisite support and firmness and are accident free.

Baby pillows come in all shapes and sizes. The key is to identify which sort of pillow is best for your baby. Baby pillows used in cribs are just as safe as any other provided they are thin and narrow. The proof of this statement lies in the fact that all hospitals use crib pillows in their childcare units. Doctors also recommend baby pillows when your baby develops a cold. The reason is that a slightly elevated baby head helps the baby breath easier when down with a cold. A baby pillow also helps prevent acid reflux and ear infections. Some parents advise that the right time to give your baby a pillow is when the baby graduates from the crib to a bed. The reason that they base this premise is on the fact that on a bed the chances of smothering are greatly reduced as the pillow is liable to fall off. Some babies even start exhibit signs that they need a pillow. They do this by holding a stuffed toy or a towel under their head and use it as a makeshift head rest. Then it’s definitely time for you to buy a good baby pillow.

Introducing a Baby Pillow In a Big Bed

As a first time parent, I research and over analyze everything. When my husband and I first found out we were pregnant, I immediately worried if I had a glass of wine before I knew or if the fumes of the bus that drove by while I was walking would harm my baby. To save my sanity, I decided to put away all the pregnancy books a couple months in, so I would stop reading about everything that could happen. After I put the books away, I found that I enjoyed my pregnancy a lot more. I still get quoted from one zinger I told my husband during those first couple months. It was something along the lines of not worrying ever again once the baby is born. He found it quite humorous and told me I would most definitely find some causes for worry in parenthood. He was right. And here my latest worry is the topic of the baby pillow.

When you purchase a crib set (blanket, crib bumper, sheets, crib skirt), a baby pillow is frequently included. This is quite confusing. Unless a child is older than the age of 2, he or she should not use a pillow. When a child is under two, the presence of a pillow can increase the risk of suffocation. Duvets and big blankets are not recommended for the same reason. A baby should be placed on his back to sleep, should not have soft things in his crib, and should not have anything covering his face. We used a sleep sack with our daughter, which kept her warm without us having to worry about bedding in her crib. Some experts say that even giving a child over the age of 2 a pillow may not make them any more comfortable than they would be without one. All experts agree, however, that you should wait to give your child a pillow until he is out of the crib.

It is suggested that a small baby pillow be introduced first, rather than an adult sized pillow. Something the size of an airplane pillow is perfect. Choose a pillow that is not feather or down, as such a pillow can often allow the head of a child to sink down too much. We recently introduced our a daughter (she is 2 and a half) to a bed and moved her out of her crib. We started with a baby pillow in the bed, per the recommendations. We would always find her hugging the baby pillow, instead of actually having her head on it. The tiny pillow would often get lost too. We moved on from the baby pillow after about two weeks. Unlike when she was sleeping with the baby pillow, she actually uses the new pillow like an adult would. She even props it up to lean on when she reads, which she thoroughly enjoys.

Child Care Essentials: Baby Sleep Pillows

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Like all parents you are likely worried that your child gets the necessary respite from all that play, a night of cozy sleep. Are you are one of those parents wondering whether your child is ready for a pillow? Most parents assume that a pillow offers the much needed comfort, when in fact your child may be just fine as it is. Well, if you think your toddler may be more comfortable with a baby sleep pillow, read on. This will depend on the age of your child, and also the place where you most likely put him to sleep. The general perception about baby sleep pillows is that it is not required for a child under 2 years of age. The use of pillows before this carries the risk of smothering. If, from your experience, you feel it is the right time to introduce a baby sleep pillow, it is a good idea to do so once your toddler moves from a crib to a bed. It is around this time that your child begins to support himself on his feet, a pillow may aid in climbing or crawling out of the crib! But you may want to try one even in a crib; just ensure it is compact and not too soft.

When choosing a pillow for your child always ensure that what you offer your child is an actual baby sleep pillow and not one you may have lying around. You may want to try a baby pillow that is the size of a travel pillow. Remember that babies have tender heads that needs good protection. Do not bother with feather pillows, as they are too soft to serve the purpose, and may trigger unnecessary reactions and even allergies. Feather pillows are also known to cause smothering as the head of the child sinks into the pillow while he is sleeping. Since most babies mostly sleep on their backs, they carry the risk of developing flat head syndrome. This is where memory foam baby sleep pillows are a god send. The cushioning supports in these pillows reduce the risk of a flat head. The Visco elastic fabric in these baby sleep pillows reduce the pressure created when sleeping on the back. And for all those trying times when pillows get soiled, these are easily machine washable. Many models come with adjustable side supports and sleep positioners to keep your baby in place.

Finally, if you still feel ambiguous about the appropriate time to begin using a baby sleep pillow consult your pediatrician. You may even wait for signs from your baby that he might do better with a baby sleep pillow, such as discomfort sleeping in a flat bed.

When a new baby is on the way, there is a lot of excitement and sometimes more than a little bit of confusion. This is even more so the case for those who are going to be parents for the first time as they have never handled a birth before. You may be wondering what kind of items to buy in order to make the new baby comfortable and happy. Aside from the obvious necessities such as a bottle or diapers, there are less known things that can ease your way into parenthood and important in keeping the baby comfortable and in good health. The baby pillow is one such item which is often given less importance than other more obvious items.

Even though they’re often sold with crib bedding sets, pillows are not recommended for children under 2. Kids that small can easily suffocate while using one. In general, it’s best to wait until your child moves from a crib to the bed before introducing a pillow.

It is also an old maids remedy and one suggested by experts that if the baby is suffering from a cold or a stuffed nose, using a pillow to elevate the head of the baby helps drain the sinuses. This can also be achieved without a pillow though as there are various other methods as well.

There are a few characteristics all baby pillows should have. Use a small pillow which is light in weight for the baby. This is so that it can not suffocate the child or make him or her too hot. Yet another thing to look for is that the pillow should be devoid of frills and fancies. This way, the baby cannot choke on anything attached to the pillow. Cotton and silk pillows are two perfect examples of baby friendly fabrics. It is best to stay away from things like feather pillows, as they could cause an unexpected allergic reaction in some babies and its best not to find out. The best possible options are those baby pillows that have a removable cover, or are machine washable as a whole as this will help keep the pillows clean.

Testing the firmness of the baby pillow to avoid suffocation or sinking or breathlessness due to nose pressed against the hard to too soft surface of the pillow, is an ideal thing to do before deciding upon the pillow. Two years is the deemed age when you ought to teach the child to sleep using a pillow. There is a high chance of suffocation in earlier stages. It may be dangerous to use a baby pillow before the age of two because the baby may be suffocated by the pillow. When the baby starts using a pillow the baby pillow should be small and non allergic body pillow. The possibilities for your baby pillow are endless.
